This Microfinance Week, Learn About EPMI: Sustaining Agriculture Through Inclusive Microfinance

ECLOF Philippines Microfinance, Inc. (EPMI) is a non-government microfinance institution providing fair credit, technical support, and training to farmers and entrepreneurs. Formed in 1972 by the National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP), a member of the Foundation for a Sustainable Society, Inc. (FSSI), EPMI became independent in 1995 and began microfinance operations in 2001. As of December 2024, it supports 15,085 farmers and micro-entrepreneurs.

FSSI currently supports EPMI in expanding its services to meet the financing needs of a recovering economy. “Our partnership with FSSI shows the power of collaboration among organizations with a shared mission. By working together, we are able to support farmers in enhancing their livelihoods, making a significant impact on the agricultural community,” said Liza Eco, Executive Director of EPMI.

Ms. Alicia Balmonte, a client of ECLOF Philippines, is involved in seaweed farming in Palawan.

EPMI’s considers its greatest achievement to be its contribution to food security, having 85% of its portfolio invested in agriculture, a sector that carries significant risk. “We believe that empowering farmers enhances their dignity by improving their livelihoods. Serving farmers plays a crucial role in society, as they are the ones who provide food for our tables,” Eco said.

Mr. Macario Duller, a client of EPMI based in Laguna, is involved in vegetable farming.

Looking ahead, EPMI envisions sustained growth, active participation in every stage of the agricultural value chain, and stronger partnerships with the public and private sectors. “Our goal is to give farmers access to the best resources and support — from input supply and production to post-harvest handling, processing, and market distribution,” Eco said. “We will also expand and sustain high-quality non-financial services, reaching not only our clients but also their families and communities — ensuring lasting impact and shared prosperity.”

As we join the celebration of the National Microfinance Week, FSSI recognizes EPMI’s work in agri-microfinance and its commitment to Filipino farmers. Through partners like EPMI, we continue to expand access to fair and sustainable financial services, support those who produce our food, and promote development in rural areas, advancing our triple bottom line by improving lives, protecting the environment, and ensuring economic viability for communities.
