Press release: As 2030 SDG Targets Near, Filipino Social Enterprises Are Building a Sustainable Future for Communities

.
As the 2030 deadline for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals approaches, social enterprises continue to play an important role in addressing development gaps in communities across the Philippines.

In a recent BusinessWorld SparkUp article, the Foundation for a Sustainable Society, Inc. shared how social enterprises are helping expand access to livelihoods, essential goods, clean energy, and inclusive economic opportunities.

Guided by the triple bottomline of people, planet, and profit, FSSI supports social enterprises that create value not only through financial sustainability, but also through positive social and environmental impact. This approach helps enterprises grow responsibly while responding to the needs of workers, farmers, entrepreneurs, and underserved communities.

The article featured examples of social enterprises and cooperatives that are contributing to local development. These include Kilusang Lima Para sa Lahat Multipurpose Cooperative in Nueva Ecija, which supports farmers and MSMEs through financial and enterprise services; Kauyagan Savers Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Bukidnon, which improves access to affordable goods; JMJ Solar Panel and Equipment Store in Agusan del Sur, which brings clean energy to off-grid communities; and Mandaue City Public Market Vendors Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Cebu, which supports public market vendors through financial services, training, and business assistance.

These initiatives demonstrate how social enterprises can help advance the country’s development priorities, including decent work, food access, renewable energy, and social inclusion.

FSSI also continues to advocate for stronger institutional support for the sector, including the Poverty Reduction through Social Enterprises Bill, which seeks to provide social enterprises with legal recognition and better access to national development programs.

Through its 2025–2029 Strategic Plan, FSSI remains committed to strengthening its support for social enterprises through financing, partnerships, capacity-building, and advocacy. By investing in enterprises that place communities and the environment at the center of business, FSSI continues to support a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable future.
